Greetings BEB-ers – all of you fans who took generous time to visit this website, and who are squinting at the pixellated text – thanks for dropping by and for reading these little journal entries. A forewarning: I haven’t written a proper journal since 1999, where the scholastic requirements of junior high forced my pen to paper (resulting in such classics as “How my Career will differ from Stalin’s” and “What I Hope to Accomplish in Novice Woodworking”). Lack of inspiration notwithstanding, here I am, typing away.

It’s a rainy and serene Sunday afternoon here in west St. John’s, and I’m more or less in my usual regime, complete with chocolate milk and Steely Dan’s Katy Lied in the player. Cars drive by on Frecker, making a swishing sound, and the leaves on the maple trees are sagging from the weight of the rain. It’s so incredibly relaxing. And yet, somehow I need to tap into the mystic source of energy required to play tonight (Mount Pearl City Days in three hours). So for now I’m going to shirk the responsibilities of the hour such as finishing my passport application, contacting the student loans offices, and filing my tax return for an infinitely bigger and profound mind-bending conundrum: deciding what the heck I’m going to wear tonight. (And, to a lesser extent, the Saturday Sudoku.) For a few of you, it may come as a surprise that a somewhat large part of our stage shows revolves around clothes and props. Also – a kudos to Shar and De for picking up those excellent toys for the Beach Pea Festival last week. For those of you playing the home game, this includes beach balls, feather boas, more red balloons (a staple at this point), hula hoops, and those colorful Hawaiian necklaces whose name eludes me. Sidenote: if either of you two read this, the package will be complete when we have a lifesize blow-up dragon (a la Tenacious D) and supersoakers. Actually, water’s probably not good for high-voltage equipment, is it? I need to study! And I’ll see if I can pick that dragon up tomorrow at any fine retailer near you.

Some random thoughts:

- If firefighters fight fire, and crimefighters fight crime, what do freedom fighters fight? They never do explain that part to us.

- I keep reading this book on anti-gravity and for some reason… I just can’t put it down!

- Christian McBride’s upright playing never ceases to amaze me.

- I haven’t cut my hair in 6 months.

- The St. John’s Jazz Festival was pretty good this year.

- Speaking of annual festivities, I’m REALLY looking forward to the George Street Festival this coming week. Kim Mitchell will once again make me go for soda, visit Rocklandwonderland, have a wild party, and do my rock n’ roll duty.

Finally, thanks for reading, and keep on truckin’.

Sincerely,
The Fellow on Stage Right (Christopher D)
